The size of your pool can be influenced by many factors: land space, the project, number of people who will use it… or even the activities your pool will be used for. For that reason, there is no such thing as a standard size to be chosen, but it is advised that you talk with your architect first.
We prepared some tips that can help you.

Size
Which is the size of your land? And how much of it is destined to the pool’s leisure area? Before anything, this is the question you should ask yourself. Generally speaking, we can classify pools as small, medium or big, and they can also vary in shape and coating.
The most common measurements in residential pool projects are 32 ft x 16 ft and 3 to 8 ft deep.
Depth
You should observe if the pool will be used only by adults or also by kids. And, of course, if the idea is to use it for leisure reasons or for practicing water sports.
As the pool probably will also be frequented by guests, you shouldn’t consider the height of the owner. Some patterns are:
- Tanning ledge or splash deck: 12 inches deep (approximately 1 ft or 30 cm); Ideal for relaxing in shallow water or for toddlers to play under supervision.
- Baja shelf or shallow lounge area: 20 inches deep (approximately 1.5 ft or 50 cm); Ideal for sitting or lounging.
- Children’s area: 3 ft deep (approximately 90 cm); Ideal for young children who can stand safely.
- Family area: 4 ft deep (approximately 1.2 m); Ideal for recreation and water games.
- Standard pool depth: 5 ft deep (approximately 1.5 m); The most common choice, that balances safety and usability for most adults.
- Deeper sections (6 to 8 ft, or more) are ideal for diving and competitive swimming, so they should only be added if the pool is designed specifically for those activities.
